covenant groups

Yes, I would like to be a part of Covenant Group!

After listening to the Council at the planning retreat, the Christian Formation team met to discuss its role in helping move the members and friends of Asbury church deeper in their spiritual lives as followers of Jesus Christ. We recalled that the Methodist movement came to be because of the commitment to church renewal made by a small group of Christ-followers who were discontent with the churches they attended and wanted more.

These adults banded together in small groups which met weekly for study, prayer, accountability, and service. These small groups allowed for authenticity and vulnerability—a chance to safely share the joys and struggles of life; but these groups were also serious in their commitment to living their faith together so that they might each grow in grace and attain the goal of the Christian life: love of God and Neighbor. We named that we seem to have lost much of the sense of commitment, excitement, and sense of purpose that fueled the early Methodist movement. We lamented the lack of close, personal relationships of study and prayer and fellowship within the life of the congregation. We decided together that nothing would ever change about the culture of our congregation from studying a book about discipleship. Discipleship is a way of life that is meant to be lived and practiced, not read and talked about!

Our ultimate goal is to see Asbury become a network of small groups of Covenant Discipleship (CD): groups of 6-10 disciples who commit to doing life together on a regular basis. These groups will study, pray, serve, and check-in with one another about life. As we grow, new groups will form and old groups will divide in order to welcome new friends to our community of faith.
